Lartigue: must-watch documentary on French amateur whose boyhood photos influenced Avedon and Bailey
J.H. Lartigue continued to edit his work all his life, continually selecting and de-selecting negatives, re-printing and re-enlarging, cropping and re-cropping, all aided by his meticulous daily diaries and notes.
"Lartigue didn't want to have the image of someone working hard, he wanted to keep this image of someone very spontaneous. When he was discovered when he was 70 years old everyone said 'What a joyful man! Bouncing and jumping and easy life! And everything, even the cats, are jumping!' But in fact he wanted to keep this image for the future, over the centuries, but it's not really the way it was."
