Alex Singleton of the Telegraph wants to put a letter in the Sunday Telegraph (27 December 2009) regarding potential problems of photography in public places.
The letter reads as follows:

"As professional and amateur photographers, we are deeply concerned about the treatment of those taking pictures in public places. Photographers using equipment larger than a compact camera are frequently stopped and searched under anti-terrorist legislation, which they find humiliating.

"We do not believe it likely that real terrorists would bother to set up a tripod or use a heavy SLR camera, as perfectly satisfactory pictures for their purposes could be taken on a discrete camera phone. If our photography has an effect on law and order, it is beneficial, as wrongdoers are unlikely to commit crimes in close proximity to someone visibly holding a camera.

"Meanwhile, some in the police, especially PCSOs, believe it is illegal to take any pictures of a police officer. This is because of ambiguous legislation, introduced earlier this year, which made it an imprisonable offence to collect "information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism". Given the existence of Google street view, we do not believe the legislation should be used against ordinary photographers.

"In March, at a meeting with representatives of the Royal Photographic Society, the British Institute of Professional Photography and Amateur Photographer, the Home Office agreed to issue guidelines to police forces spelling out that the law must not be misused against those engaged in legitimate photographic activity. This does not appear to have had the desired effect.

"Rather than treat photographers as terrorists, the Government should amend the Anti-Terrorism Act to prevent its misuse and explain to forces that a hostile attitude towards photographers is unwelcome."

Best wishes,
Alex (+365 photographers)

Hi IHPhoto, first of all i would like to point out that these things are not solutions merely ideas. I was suggesting ideas primarily relating to print sales and raising funds for personal projects. How could this work for editorial photographers? Through the sale of prints/selections of prints at different price tiers after they have been published, or by allowing an audience to fund projects that can then be associated with them or their company. For more on how editorial photographers could benefit for working for free please see Jonathan Worth's post above or at http://jonathan-worth.blogspot.com/
Cheers

Some people are thinking about how photographic practice needs to adapt and change for the future.

Jonathan Worth has posted this thought-provoking "proposal" on his blog:

http://jonathan-worth.blogspot.com/2009/11/proposal.html

And Matt Johnston wonders if photography could learn lessons from the music industry on his:

http://mjohnstonphotography.blogspot.com/2009/12/should-we-look-to-music-industry-for.html

Then today, @IHphoto asks of Matt: How wd this work for editorial photographers? As in most things internet related these new ideas are backhanded transactions. (Although I will concede that advertising pays for the other stuff on the pages of periodicals.)

Discussion started on Twitter recently about boudoir photography:

@NewPhotoDigest: Boudoir is one of the fastest growth areas in social photography in the UK. And most of the togs are women.

@thetrudz: @NewPhotoDigest New to MD/DC, not sure. Didn't know very many boudoir in Sth FL. Many I see in boudoir are male & kinda unprofessional.

I have noticed that photographers can tend to have blinkers when it comes to thinking about their websites. They often seem to compartmentalize their thinking about it, as if their site was somehow a separate business to their main one.

A boutique wedding photographer was surprised to have had only five leads come in cold by themselves from her website in a year. She doesn't promote her business much. (She doesn't want to do more than twelve to fifteen weddings a year anyway.) But she's surprised that her site doesn't magically appear on screen in front of more prospective brides. "Simon, I want to pay for more S.E.O. Here, take more money!"

That's like going to your doctor, not telling him your symptoms, but telling him instead what drug you want for your self-diagnosed ailment. Whoa!

Well, if you don't promote your business, you aren't promoting your website either -- it's part of your business. If you aren't putting your business on directories, for instance (and that's often free), your website isn't getting there either; so it won't have those sites linking in to it, and they won't be boosting your site's rankings in organic search.

That's how rankings in (unpaid) natural organic search work: the more sites you have linking in to you, and the more 'authority' those sites have, the higher you rank. And if you rank high, more folk are likely to find you when searching for a 'wedding photographer'.

Then there's the problem with how she identified leads from her site. Basically, as far as she was concerned, if the lead came in via the e-mail contact form, that was a website lead. If not, it wasn't.

The truth is, a bunch of customers who contacted her by phone or walked into her studio only did so because they'd seen her site. Far more did this then used the contact form. This shouldn't be surprising, it's the norm.

Your website isn't separate from your main business, it's an integral part of it. You know that if you stop handing out business cards, your phone won't ring as much. But would you be surprised that fewer people will go to your website as well? How about this: if you take down your website, your phone will ring less too. Who knew?

J.H. Lartigue continued to edit his work all his life, continually selecting and de-selecting negatives, re-printing and re-enlarging, cropping and re-cropping, all aided by his meticulous daily diaries and notes.

"Lartigue didn't want to have the image of someone working hard, he wanted to keep this image of someone very spontaneous. When he was discovered when he was 70 years old everyone said 'What a joyful man! Bouncing and jumping and easy life! And everything, even the cats, are jumping!' But in fact he wanted to keep this image for the future, over the centuries, but it's not really the way it was."

from this documentary on Man Ray: http://bit.ly/6FehHM

“Man Ray developed a few simple rules. He set the lighting before the clients arrived, to reduce session times to a minimum. He recommended that clients shouldn’t smile. He asked them to close their eyes, and then open them suddenly. Sometimes, to relax his ‘patients’ — as he called them — he would give them a prop to hold, so that their expression became serene and profound. The background was usually sober: hessian, chequer-board designs, plain white or grey background paper, on which he played with shadows. Sometimes he featured an object too. He took only a few shots, never more than twelve. He set up his camera at least three metres from the subject, to avoid distorting the face. He cropped his prints carefully. If necessary, he retouched the photos to correct any defects, adding a few pencil strokes to refine a face, or a hip. He didn’t like taking his equipment out of the studio, but he did so sometimes. He knew how to capture in the setting for his subjects some significant details of their personality. Even in his early New York portraits Man Ray understood that what makes a good photograph is the play of contrasts. It could be two faces, or even three; a silhouette and it’s shadow; the light and dark of an outfit; a face and a mask. It’s a lesson drawn from chess. As he put it, ‘The opposition between a white and a black square is fundamentally beautiful’. There are always two, almost equal, parts in a Man Ray portrait. Hands and faces are distributed symettrically. His fashion photos demonstrate his mastery of such contrasts. –Jean-Paul Fargier

Well hello Peachy..

Good to meet you! I am Simon, a professional musician working in school orientated workshops and music composition. I am approx 2 hours from central London. I have mostly shot wildlife and landscape, I especially love night photography and the challenges that brings.
However I am now starting to be offered commercial work in vehicles.

I am new to the idea of making a living from photography and would ideally see some of my existing work sell, even though I have supplied my local tourism office with imagery.

Well thats about it from me, though other members reading this thread might like to know that Peachy and I have known each other for many years now (2002) and have met on several occasions..

My website is http://www.sounds-and-images.co.uk though I tend to update Flickr more often http://www.flickr.com/photos/sounds-and-images

Many thanks for having me here and I look forward to meeting more members...

Selina Maitreya's latest blog post http://bit.ly/3yp193 says:

"Photographers have asked me for years for the magic formula for success in business. I've said there was none. I was wrong. When I look closely at the steps taken by photographers who have achieved successes, I see a different variation of the same process; I call the formula, THE MIX.

First of all, let me be clear, the successful photographers I am talking about are not the Annie Leibovitz's, of the world. I am talking about photographers you may never hear of, or read about in PDN. They may sit next to you at an APA and ASMP meetings. You might have seen their post on a photoeditor.com but most likely you'll never even know they exist. However, they are successful, as each one at different times in their career has reached their creative and financial goals. They have achieved their success, by employing not one or two steps of the MIX but by putting all of the essential steps needed into place. They went for the full Monty, they worked the complete mix. That's the key.

You don't need every sales option, but some components can't be left out and you will need to choose one option from each section of the process.

Here's the formula."

http://bit.ly/3yp193

PWP is based in New York. It is an active group of over 200 photographers. Many are full time working photographers, some work part-time both in fine art and commercial areas and others work in related fields as photo editors, photo researchers and curators. And, since almost all members are working digitally - either shooting, scanning, printing or all three, the sharing of information through PWP's very active group email as well as through small informal venues is an important part of our program. PWP now has a number of on-line presences in addition to group email.

I guess the first thing might be an introduction to who we are and what we do, so I'll start.

My real name is Andrea Lane and I do portrait and wedding photography. The wedding stuff I do with my business partner Keith. I'm happily married to Arnold (Yes, that's right, Arnold Lane, remember Pink Floyd's song?) with 4 kids and 10 grandkids.

I've been a professional photographer for around 4 years, part time and full time for around 18 months. I also work four hours a week at Jessops in Hemel Hempstead. The pay is bad but I get to work in what seems like a toy shop to me. :) I spend more than I earn. You do get good discounts! :)

I love taking evening/night/low light/off camera flash type photos but don't get out enough to play (not as much as I'd like to). Mind you I have a wedding at 4pm in a church in Scotland this Friday...

I also run http://www.photographers4charity.co.uk, baby sit twice a week for three of my grandkids etc etc. Don't do much really. :)

I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer last year but I'm doing fine and loving life.

Let's hear about everyone else.
